2008-17-10 (Paris)

At its 180th session, in October 2008, the Executive Board of UNESCO considered and endorsed the revised Strategic Plan of activities for 2008-2013 of the Information for All Programme (IFAP). During the debate on the Strategic Plan for IFAP, Board Members, in the majority of their interventions, expressed satisfaction with the new orientations given to IFAP and underlined the importance of this Programme for the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals and the objectives of the World Summit on the Information Society.

The different interventions also underscored that the subjects addressed under this item appear to be particularly important for Member States and it is expected that for improving the future work of IFAP, Council Members and IFAP National Committees would be more actively involved in the various activities of the Programme.

In the coming years, the Information for All Programme of UNESCO will therefore focus on the following overarching objective:

To help Member States develop and implement national information policies and knowledge strategies in a world increasingly using information and communication technologies (ICT).

IFAP can thus make the most effective contribution by assisting Member States develop and implement national information policy frameworks. The Programme will also focus on the following five priorities: information for development, information accessibility, information literacy, information preservation and information ethics.

The Strategic Plan sets out ways for achieving these goals. The Plan can be consulted here.
