Building knowledge societies and the role of UNESCO’s Information for All Programme (IFAP) in this process were on the agenda of a conference entitled “UNESCO’s Information for All Programme: Universal Access to Information” that took place last week in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

 

The some 200 participants of the conference that was organized by the Russian National Committee for the Information for All Programme under the auspices of UNESCO and with the support of the Russian National Commission for UNESCO, discussed the creation, preservation and use of electronic information resources for social and economic development, the potential of partnerships between cultural, educational and scientific institutions, state and municipal government bodies and the private sector, as well as the role of libraries, archives and museums in the information society.

 

Evgeny Kuzmin, Chair of the Russian IFAP Committee reported on the implementation of IFAP projects in the Russian Federation. Also on the agenda ware presentations of the Russian version of UNESCO’s “Policy guidelines for the development and promotion of governmental public domain information” and of the first volume of the “Virtual collection of Russian and world classic literature. 1000 books for schools and libraries”, a project of the UNESCO Office in Moscow.

The participants from 20 countries included experts of National Commissions for UNESCO from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Germany, Georgia, Poland, Russian Federation and New Zeeland, representatives of the UNESCO Moscow Office, the UN Information Center in Moscow and UNICEF, project managers of the European projects MINERVA and PULMAN) as well as representatives of the private sector, NGOs and foundations.
