Internet for the blind: a project of the Research Institute of Information Technologies in Social Sphere

The Research Institute of Information Technologies in Social Sphere (NII IT SS) of the Kemerovo State University of Culture and Arts—the basic partner of the Russian Committee of UNESCO Information for All Programme in information culture—has designed an official website for the Kemerovo Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.

 

The website was presented on May 26, 2009, with emphasis on project connection with the contribution of NII IT SS to UNESCO Information for All Programme. Professor Nadezhda Kolkova, project manager, spoke about the new website as a tool of Programme implementation.

 

Boris Trefilov, Director of the Kemerovo Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Handicapped; Valentin Khryakov, Chair of the Kemerovo regional branch of the All-Russia Association of the Blind; and Dmitry Kovalev, Director of the Kemerovo vocational training institution affiliated to the All-Russia Association of the Blind, highlighted the novelty and social importance of the website and its social importance to the visually handicapped in Kuzbas. Professor Natalya Gendina, Director of NII IT SS under the Kemerovo State University for Arts and Culture (KemGUKI), regarded the website as a new field of Institute work reflecting a pioneer approach to the formation of blind persons’ information culture.

 

Blind library users spoke at the presentation about the importance of the establishment of the website—an essential information resource. It describes library work and services, lists the latest acquisitions, and presents social projects for limited-abilities persons. The website will soon be available to all Internet users.

 

The official opening of the website was timed to Culture Days in Kuzbas and National Librarian’s Day.
