Participation of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme in the IFLA General Conference 2009

The World Library and Information Congress 2009—the 75th General Conference and Assembly of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions)—took place in Milan, August 21-28.
 
The congress, attended by more than 3,000, discussed open access to information and copyright in the Internet era, overcoming the digital gap between information-poor and information-rich countries, and the preservation and development of cultural heritage, reading and information competence in the multi-cultural world.
 
The theme of the congress was “Libraries create futures: building on cultural heritage”. The Russian delegation included Evgeny Kuzmin, Chair of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme and President of the Interregional Centre of Library Cooperation; Ekaterina Kudrina, Rector of the Kemerovo State University for Arts and Culture (KemGUKI) and member of the Russian IFAP Committee; and Natalya Gendina, Director of the Institute of Information Technologies of Social Problems under the Kemerovo State University for Arts and Culture.
 
Evgeny Kuzmin met during the congress with IFLA President Ellen R. Tise to discuss practical details of developing partnership between the Russian IFAP Committee and the Interregional Centre of Library Cooperation with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.
 
Professor Natalya Gendina, who represents the Russian Federation in the IFLA Information Literacy Standing Committee, told during its meetings about Russian work to enhance public information competence and culture. As she informed her colleagues, one of the most valuable IFLA editions—Information Literacy: International Perspectives (Jesus Lau, ed.) is ready for print in Moscow and will soon come out. Professor Gendina is the science editor of the Russian edition, and the author of its introduction. The project was launched by the Russian IFAP Committee, which possesses the right of its translation and publication in Russia.
