The presentation of the book The Role of Libraries in the Formation and Development of Information Transparency Culture: Social Functions of Librarianship

The book by Bulgarian scholars Stoyan Denchev and Irena Peteva The Role of Libraries in the Formation and Development of Information Transparency Culture: Social Functions of Librarianship was presented at the Moscow State Printing University on June 25, 2009.
 
Stoyan Denchev is a prominent Bulgarian researcher and community activist, the Rector of the Sofia-based State University of Library Studies and Information Technologies. Irena Peteva, its Pro-rector, is an expert on public access to information, leading-edge technologies and library management. The book was reviewed by Evgeny Kuzmin, Chair of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme and President of the Interregional Centre of Library Cooperation; Professor Georgi Matyukhin of the Moscow State Printing University; and  Latifa Mamedova, Head of the Library Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan.
 
The book analyzes the impact of information environment on the emergent information transparency culture, characterizes information society and the role of information in it, and shows many aspects of access to information. It provides a detailed analysis of the essence of the electronic government, and the prerequisites and conceptual problems of its formation. Special attention is paid to libraries as part of the present-day social infrastructure, and to the problems of information security, and accessibility and reliability of information. The book is of interest to researchers and experts on library studies and information technologies.
 
The presentation was attended by Alexander Tsyganenko, Rector of the Moscow State Printing University; Alexander Voropayev, department head of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications; Sergei Bakeikin, Managing Director of the Interregional Centre of Library Cooperation; Svetlana Zorina, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Knizhnaya Industria; Gennady Popov, Deputy Director General of the AST book publishing group; Nikolai Pakhomov, Director General of the Logos book publishing group; and others.
