The conference Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Cyberspace among the central 2008 events in Yakutia

2009-06-07 (Moscow)

The recently published photo album The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia): 2008 names the international conference Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Cyberspace, organized in July 2008 on the initiative of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme, among last year’s three principal events in Yakutia.

The international conference Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Cyberspace, held in the framework of the International Year of Languages, proclaimed by the United Nations, was a field for exchange of innovative international experience. It demonstrated Russia’s landmark initiatives in preserving multilingualism and cultural diversity in cyberspace, laid political foundations for their further development in Russia, and determined the prospects of such development.

The conference gathered 102 representatives of 15 countries from all continents—leaders and staff members of intergovernmental, international and nongovernment organizations, state ruling bodies, agencies and institutions of culture, education, research, information and communications, business, civil society, the mass media, political and community activists, and foremost experts.

The Lena Resolution—the final conference document—places special emphasis on the role of the preservation of languages and their representation in cyberspace for the implementation of the WSIS Recommendations (Geneva, 2003 and Tunis, 2005) and for universal access to information. The Lena Resolution advances a number of initiatives to promote linguistic and cultural diversity in cyberspace.
