UNESCO Director General: Russia exemplifies the implementation of the UNESCO Information for All Programme

The July issue of the journal Mezhdunarodnaya Zhizn (International Affairs), published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, carries an interview with Mr Koichiro Matsuura, in which the UNESCO Director General notes Russia’s leading role in implementing   the UNESCO Information for All Programme.
 
“We highly appreciate the Russian Government’s support of the Programme. Russia is rendering us exemplary assistance,” he said. In particular, Russia has established its national IFAP Committee. Mr Matsuura called other countries to follow its example.
 
 
The UNESCO Director General has highly appreciated the activities of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme on many occasions. In particular, he said in a letter of gratitude to President Vladimir Putin summarizing the international conference UNESCO between Two Phases of the World Summit on the Information Society: “I would like to note the contribution to the conference and its preparation by the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme and its Chair, Mr Evgeny Kuzmin <…> The idea of this forum, which is so important for Russia and for the promotion of these essential issues in the region, belongs to him. The active and fruitful work of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme to promote this intergovernmental UNESCO programme in Russia and the neighbouring countries has won international acclaim and deserves every support.”
 
Mr Matsuura also mentioned dynamic activities of the Russian IFAP Committee in his opening address to the World Congress of News Agencies: “Russia is member of the Intergovernmental Council of the Programme and has an active National Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme, chaired by Mr Evgeny Kuzmin <…> The Russian Committee has organized the conference UNESCO Information for All Programme: Universal Access to Information—a meeting useful in every respect.”
