United Nations Literacy Decade - High-level Symposium
2009-16-01 (Paris)

In 2008, halfway through the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD) 2003-2012, UNESCO conducted a review of progress. This mid-Decade review of the UNLD has shown that, while progress has been made, much greater efforts must be made by all stakeholders to achieve the goal of literacy for all and sustainable development. There is an urgent need for renewed momentum and a clear vision on how to accelerate progress.

The second half of UNLD (2008-2012) must rise to this challenge by providing a new thrust for literacy. The three key areas identified by the mid-Decade review as requiring reinforced action are: the mobilization of stronger commitment for literacy; the reinforcement of more effective programme delivery; and the mobilization and harnessing of resources for literacy. A coherent and forward-looking strategy that focuses actively on these priority areas must now be developed and put into place.

In this regard, UNESCO will organize a Technical Consultation which will take place in Paris on 26 – 28 January 2009. It will start with a High-Level Symposium chaired by the Director-General of UNESCO, with the participation of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors and other advocates of literacy.

The Consultation will bring together around 50 experts and key stakeholders to examine the strategy for the remaining years of the Decade, and will be a major occasion on which to strengthen commitment and cooperation for literacy at the global level.
